For 2008, the Yamaha R6 widens the gap to the rest of the 600 field. For starters, an even more predatory leading edge with minimal frontal area guides air straight through the R6's steering head and into an airbox newly armed with YCC-I-our exclusive variable intake-length system first seen on the R1 last year. On the higher -revving R6, its effect is even more eye-opening-both broadening the powerband and reinforcing the R6's amazing high-rev hit. Once inhaled and atomeizec with fuel from the R6's dual-stage injector system, maxture enters compact new combustion chambers with higher, 13:1 compression. Over 50 friction-reducing measures, including wider crankshaft bearing, let the R6 rev up quicker than ever-and its advanced fly-by-wire throttle system (YCC-I) has been optimized to work with all those changes. Extensive chassis modifications are designed to make this the sharpest-handling R6 ever: Thickening the steering head area and painstakingly removing material elsewhere, refining the shapes of the fork tubes and lower triple clamp, adding a lightweight magnesium subframe-it adds up to a bike that snaps into corners, clings to inside lines, and propels itself down the next straight like never before. And looks even more wicked. The new R6 is what it was: The most scintillatingly fun-to-ride track-ready production bike money can buy. |
